![]() ![]() ![]() The second screen indicates the path where FreeSpace 2 is installed. Once the game is installed, download the FSO Installer (look for the small “Download” link near the top of the page), unzip it, and run the FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.exe executable.Ĭlick Next on the first screen. It also keeps your pilots and some other files in the same directory instead of being saved in a different location ( C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Freespace 2\). It’s not a requirement to change the installation location, but it can alleviate potential headaches down the road if you decide to start using lots of mods. The Program Files directory is protected with additional security, which can create issues with mods for the game. If you get it from here, I recommend you change the installation location from the default C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Freespace 2\ to C:\Games\Freespace 2\. If you need a copy, I recommend Good Old Games (it’s where I bought my copy from as I no longer had my original discs from years ago). First, you’ll need to install Descent FreeSpace 2. These instructions are for Windows 7 圆4, but they shouldn’t be too different for OS X or Linux users. With a little extra work, you can enjoy FreeSpace 2 with modern graphics and audio, several additional campaigns, and even the entire FreeSpace 1 campaign. ![]() However, thanks to the release of its source code several years ago, the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project (FSSCP) has made a ton of enhancements to the game, culminating in the current version of FreeSpace 2 Open (FS2Open – 3.6.12 as of this writing). If you were to install FreeSpace 2 without any modifications, it would still hold up OK. I don’t think it tops the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games, but it’s still a must-have for sci-fi and space simulation fans. To this day it’s one of the best space combat simulation ever made in my opinion. Vanilla FS2, no there are no cockpits.Descent FreeSpace 2 needs no introduction to most PC gamers who grew up in the 90s. Sorry for the probable typos, typed this from a capricious device, making the cursor jump everywhere pretty randomly., 1) Don't think so - maybe in Freespace Open, but I still don't think so.Ģ) Through Freespace Open mods, yes - definitely for some of the total conversions, but not sure how many/if any mods for the regular FS campaigns have cockpits available. Telika: For now i've just installed Freespace 2 and its basic update mods, and played a bit of the tutorial. Sorry for the probable typos, typed this from a capricious device, making the cursor jump everywhere pretty randomly., Is there an in-game mode of vision that I haven't found ? Or, okay, maybe a specific excellent mod for this ? I saw several screenshots with cockpits, but I assume these are mods - either total conversions or "invented" (non-"canonical") cockpits. I know that many cockpit-based sims offer HUD vision as an option, but does Freespace 2 provide one ? I didn't find alternate views, apart from outside views. I usually prefer this to the gain of visibility provided by pure HUD display or 3rd person. It's an annoyance in many games, but freespace is to customisable, I wonder if there's an easy way to resolve this.Ģ) I'm also impressed by the colour customisation of the HUD, but I do kinda miss one element that attracks me in space sims : actual cockpit layout, as a constant reminder that we are hurling through space in a metal space can (especially with the semi-recent trend of showing acceleration and deceleration through cockpit distance). It's a bit annoying to search frantically where the slash is supposed to be. I have two question, of very moderate importance.ġ) Is there a way to define the keyboard type? I'm on a swiss qwertz, so, while I can define the keys I want, the tutorial reminder names the keys as if I had another type of keyboard. For now i've just installed Freespace 2 and its basic update mods, and played a bit of the tutorial. ![]()
